Once complete, the academy will provide state-of-the-art facilities to train an additional 50 imaging professionals each year, ranging from apprentices to qualified radiographers. Spanning 4,000 square feet, the building will house two mammography rooms, two ultrasound rooms, and three consultation spaces, enabling the delivery of high-quality care and education.
Enhancing Local Healthcare Capacity
The project will increase breast screening capacity in the area by an additional 13,000 appointments annually, according to Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
This expansion is expected to make a tangible difference in the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, underscoring the academy’s importance to the region and beyond.
From Fundraising to Groundbreaking
The ceremonial groundbreaking was led by breast cancer survivor Rebecca Hartley and Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver, whose fundraising campaign galvanized widespread community support. Backed by Prevent Breast Cancer and the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Charity, their efforts raised £3.9 million, ensuring the project could move forward.
Looking Ahead
Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, with virtual training for breast imaging specialists already underway to bridge the gap while the academy is being built. AFL Architects is proud to play a role in this transformative project, contributing to a facility that will serve as both a local and national resource.
