Elevating Matchday Atmosphere: Licensed Standing at Stoke City FC's bet365 Stadium

← Back to news & insight

Licensed standing areas, designed by AFL Architects, have been successfully introduced at Stoke City FC's iconic bet365 Stadium. As part of the club's ambitious efforts to enhance the matchday atmosphere, these innovative standing sections have been strategically designed to elevate fan engagement while prioritising safety.

Strategic Placement for Maximum Impact

The licensed standing areas, located in the Caldwell Construction (South) Stand and the southeast corner of the stadium, represent a key component of Stoke City’s broader vision for invigorating the matchday experience. These sections will allow fans to cheer on their team while standing, further intensifying the passion and energy that have long been synonymous with the club’s home ground.

The introduction of these standing sections comes in response to overwhelming support from fans, who have long advocated for more dynamic ways to engage with the action on the pitch. Recognizing this, AFL Architects has worked closely with the club to design safe standing solutions that meet both the supporters' desires and modern safety standards.

Relocation of Away Supporters

In addition to providing an enhanced experience for home supporters, the southeast corner of the stadium has been reimagined to accommodate away fans. Traditionally, visiting supporters were located behind the goal and adjacent to the tunnel. However, for the 2024/25 season, the away allocation has been shifted to the southeast corner, ensuring an optimized view and experience for all attendees.

Since the stadium's opening in 1997, Stoke City FC has been renowned for its electrifying atmosphere. The newly introduced licensed standing sections are expected to play a significant role in amplifying this environment, particularly in the south stand. The club anticipates that this area will naturally evolve into a core generator of noise and excitement.

Prioritizing Fan Safety

While the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd are integral to the matchday experience, safety remains paramount. AFL Architects has designed these standing areas with the utmost care, ensuring that fans can enjoy the thrill of the game in a secure environment. To this end, guidelines have been established for ticket holders in the licensed standing areas, including designated seating and clear instructions on how to safely stand while watching the match.

A Significant Milestone

The introduction of licensed standing at the bet365 Stadium marks a significant milestone for both Stoke City FC and AFL Architects. This project highlights the commitment of both organizations to creating a vibrant and safe matchday atmosphere.
