In his role, Tom’s responsibilities can shift from project to project. However since joining AFL his main focus has been the conceptual development of several projects through the strategic design and feasibility stages.
Tom's Role
An Athletes Perspective
Whilst working on sports projects, he leverages a distinct athlete perspective, ensuring that designs cater to the specific needs of athletes performing at elite levels. Integrating his experience of working and competing at games and events, he devises solutions that address the infrastructure necessary for hosting events while also considering the project’s environmental ambitions.
Marginal Gains
As an athlete, Tom adheres to the principle of marginal gains, famously advocated by Sir David Brailsford in the early 2000s. This philosophy posits that by dissecting a task into its constituent parts and striving for a 1% enhancement in each area, the cumulative effect can yield substantial improvements.
Although originally conceived for sports performance, Tom believes this principle seamlessly translates to the design process. By deconstructing every aspect of a project to meticulously address the requirements and experiences of the users, Tom aims to design something truly exceptional.
In addition to his architectural work at AFL and playing lacrosse, Tom holds positions of significance within the sport. Tom serves as an elected member of the World Lacrosse Athlete Commission and fulfills the role of men’s player representative for England Lacrosse.
